I must add that there do exist some genuine cases -- most of them in the academia.
There was this deer we knew ... a math grad hint hint. I once observed him cross a busy street oblivious to the traffic. When a car came to screeching halt, nearly running him over, he gave a start and stared as if it was the last thing he expected to see on a road.

Heartwarming ! One hopes that the doe is possessed of street smarts enough for two, which is exactly the amount that's required in this case.
